0COMMUNITY GARDEN OPENS
Handsworth Community garden opened on Sunday 30th July 2017, in typical British summer weather – rain and shine.
Chief gardener Eleanor Hoad studied under the tutelage of Patrick Whitefield, who himself was a student of celebrated permaculture expert Charles Dowding. She is part of the Friends of Handsworth Park team who started this project earlier this year.
The garden consists of herbs (culinary and medicinal), vegetables, soft fruit and flowers. It isĀ still is its early days and the Friends are keen to involve the whole community in keeping it going. Eleanor and Friends will be there every Friday from 11am to 1pm to help any volunteer. Everyone is welcome.
Lee Southall, District Park Manager for Ladywood, Perry Barr and City Centre officially opened the garden in front of the community bear who will stay and guard the garden.
You can access the garden via the Holly Road gate nearest to the gardeners’ sheds.
