HANDSWORTH CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

Here are a couple of events to celebrate IWD:

1. FREE Activities for women and girls over 10 years old – Come Rain or Shine, #This Girl Can

Sunday 8th March 2015 at Edgbaston Reservoir 

What will you be doing on International Women’s Day on Sunday 8th March?

 Birmingham Rowing Club, Midland Sailing Club and Edgbaston Watersports

will be running free taster sessions for girls and women in four activities

(entrance on Icknield Port Road, B16 0AA).

Activities available: open canoeing, rowing, sailing and cycling

Time slots available: 11.00am – 12.00pm, 12.30pm – 1.30pm & 2.00pm   – 3.00pm

You don’t need any special equipment or clothing to take part. We will provide you with all the safety equipment, but please wear old trainers or similar and bring a change of clothes and a towel.

BOOKING IN ADVANCE RECOMMENDED

 Activities are open to anyone ten years and above, and if you have a disability please contact us on 0121 454 1997 to discuss arrangements as we have many activities that  you can take part in and Edgbaston Watersports is a registered Sailability centre.

Refreshments will be available at throughout the day at Midland Sailing Club, and any girl or woman taking part in an activity will get a voucher for a free hot drink or juice. There will also be displays and lots of information about these activities.
This is a special activity day as part of the national Sport England ‘This Girl Can’ programme aimed at encouraging girls and women to try out new sports.

Please note these are not female-only activities, there will be male and female instructors and club members who will be there throughout the day to make sure we can offer the maximum number of girls and women the chance to take part in these activities. Dads and boys are of course welcome to come along to encourage their daughters and mums to take part in all the activities.
We hope to see you at Come Rain or Shine, This Girl Can on International Women’s Day, Sunday 8th March 2015 at Edgbaston Reservoir from 11am to 4pm, but if you can’t make it that day and are keen to find out more about any of these activities you can contact the organisations directly.

2. More Handsworth Park activities, as part of the This Girl Can campaign:

Sunday 15th March Slow Running 11am at the Boathouse, Handsworth Park – beginners jogging, walking, running

Tuesday 24th March Pregnancy Walk 10.30am at Sons of Rest, Handsworth Park – walk for pregnant women and women who’ve just had a baby

Tuesday 24th March Mother and Daughter Tennis 7pm – 9pm at Holford Drive Community Tennis Club, Holford Drive, Perry Barr (near One Stop/UCE)

All welcome. All activities are free. Qualified coaches and leaders at each event.

3. Black Women in Politics and Birmingham Empowerment Forum event: “Community Question Time – Election Special” this Friday 6 March, Laurel Road Community Sports Centre, Handsworth 6.30pm.

The five main political parties will be represented. Topics: 1. Health Inequalities; 2. Engaging the Black Community & 3. Legislating around the Criminal Justice System. (free event)
